Junior Elsie Dickerson raced to wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 freestyle, and the Butte High girls swim team split with Helena High and Helena Capital at its annual dual meet on Friday.
The Bulldogs had just 14 of their 33 swimmers competing on the day due to illness preventing many from reaching the minimum number of practices. Twelve of those competitors were girls, and seven were swimming in their first meet.
"For a first meet, it went well," Butte High coach Lynn Shrader said.
Dickerson topped the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 36.51 seconds, topping Capital's Anna Kerins by nearly 3.5 seconds. She won the 100 free (1:02.86) over Kerins again by a nearly identical margin.
Another junior, Sidney Christie, picked up the Bulldogs' only other win by topping the 100 breaststroke field in 1:24.62. That gave her a nearly five-second cushion over Capital's Leah Baranek.
The Butte High girls topped Helena High, 121-89, while falling to Capital, 117-98. The Bulldog boys fell to Helena High, 109-23, and to Capital, 106-20.
The Butte High girls also took second in three different relays. In the 200 medley, Jenna Maroni, Emily Vincent, Abby Malyevac and Mia Jefferson finished just behind Capital. In the 200 free, Christie, Kennedi Ferriter, Nicole Hyatt and Dickerson repeated the feat. In the 400 free, it was Hyatt, Christie, Devin Amtmann and Dickerson doing the honors.
Sophomore Zach Johnson led the Butte boys by taking second in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.74, just over a second behind Helena High's Jacob Malaski.
