Butte High’s Jake Bentley topped the boys’ 100-meter freestyle race and then led the Bulldogs’ 200 freestyle relay team to victory at the Five B’s swim meet on Saturday in Bozeman.
Overall, the Butte High boys and girls both finished second behind Bozeman in the team scoring, and the Bulldogs were second in combined scoring with 352 points to the Hawks’ 718.
“I am very impressed with how (the swimmers) are improving,” Butte High coach Lynn Shrader said. “They are working very hard to improve each meet, and it is showing.”
Bentley’s winning time of 58.12 seconds in the 100 free topped teammate Zach Johnson (1:02.01) for the win, while Bozeman’s Tate May (1:02.40) was just behind in third.
Bentley teamed up with Johnson, Kyle Komm and Trevor Komm to put up a winning time of 1:56.34 in the 200 free relay. That was more than three seconds better than second-place Bozeman. Butte High’s secondary relay squad was third in the event.
The same group took second in the 400 free relay.
Bentley added a second-place showing in the 50 free, finishing less than a half-second behind Billings Senior’s Ethan Harder. Johnson was second in the 100 free, with Komm taking fourth.
On the girls’ side, the Bulldogs were led by a number of fourth-place finishers including Elsie Dickerson (200 IM), Sidney Christie (100 breast) and Nicole Hyatt (400 free). All three of the Bulldogs’ relays also took fourth.
“The girls have been improving a great deal, which showed today in their second-place finish,” Shrader said. “There were some great top-five finishes.”
Butte High’s next meet is Saturday in Great Falls.
