David slew Goliath twice and then turned the slingshot in his own direction.

Wrestling teams from Sidney and Havre, both Class A squads, powered themselves into the championship match of the Mining City Duals at Ross J. Richardson Memorial Gym on Saturday by winning semifinal nailbiters against two Class AA powers.

When they faced off for the title, Havre coming in off of a 33-32 win over Bozeman and Sidney a 39-39 tie against Billings Skyview — won by virtue of an 8-7 edge in bouts won — it ended up being a championship match of the highest order.

In the end, Sidney held on 36-34 with a pin in the last match of the night to take home the crown.

Gresh Jones’ pin 39 seconds into the match at 125-pounds clinched the win for Sidney in a title contest many believed was the first in a long while that saw two Class A’s team wrestle it out.

“It was a great win, a great effort by everybody who wrestled,” Jordan Stevens, Sidney’s 140-pounder, said. “It was great. Havre is a great team, great dual. It was nice to see two Class A schools in the final. It says anything can happen.”

Sidney’s win came despite competing with two open weight classes due to injury.

“Havre’s won it two or three times and so have we and we both would put our programs up against anyone,” Sidney head coach Guy Melby said. “We don’t shy away from competition. With two open weight classes I wouldn’t have thought we would have made it this far. I was pleased with our efforts. We only have two seniors on our team. We are young and hungry.”

Billings Skyview took third-place with a 43-30 win over Bozeman.

As for the hosts Butte, the Bulldogs wrapped an overall successful tournament run by going 1-2 on the second day to wrap up a 4-2 run.

Championship Pool 3

Butte entered the day with hopes of making the championship semifinals, but fell short in pool 3, splitting their two matches — a win against Flathead and a loss against Havre.

“I was proud of how the kids went out and fought, digging, clawing, scratching...that’s what we want,” Butte head coach James Humphrey said. “I think we have taken positive steps and what we do looking forward to is not to expect any easy matches.”

The Bulldogs got a bit of revenge in their championship pool opener, taking a 45-42 decision over Kalispell Flathead in a rematch of last week’s dual in Butte.

The Bulldogs lost that match-up 45-30 in a decision that could have easily gone the other way.

“I was pleased, our goal was to win that dual and we did,” Humphrey said.

All but one match was decided by pin.

Starting at 98-pounds the Braves came out strong early with two first-round pins to go up 12-0, but Butte’s Bridger Mooney got his boys on track with a pin at :43 in the 112-pound match.

At 119-pounds Braxton Henningson broke out to a 5-1 lead, but a costly error would lead to a Braves pin at 2:46 and an 18-6 Flathead lead.

Joey Blunt dominated in swift fashion with a pin in 35 seconds at 125-pounds and Butte was within six points again.

Butte took its first lead when Levi Renz won at 135-pounds behind some dominating wrestling which ended with a toss and pin in the third round to put his team up 24-18.

Jarrett Rowling kept up the heat with a pin at 1:08 for the Bulldogs as he continues his strong run of wrestling at 140-pounds.

Then the lead grew to 36-18 when at 145-pounds Andre Vialapondo recorded a pin at 1:33 and Butte was two wins away from a dual win.

After nine straight pins the fans were treated to a battle at 152-pounds as Tommy Challeen battled the Braves’ Suny Cheff in a rematch from last week’s matchup in the dual between the two teams.

Challeen led 2-0 after two rounds hoping to gain some revenge from his loss to Cheff just eight days earlier.

Up 3-1 heading into the final minute, Challeen defended well against Cheff who tried in vain to get a last winning shot and fell to the Bulldog 5-1 at 152-pounds.

“There were no cautions, no mistakes, and I wrestled smart,” Challeen said. “I think I still should have beaten him worse. As a team we still need to work on conditioning, because we still need more. The coaches are all over us. We will get this figured out.”

Needing three team points to clinch at least a tie, Butte sent out Bryce Armstrong to grapple at 160-pounds and the Bulldog delivered times two.

Armstrong clinched the dual with a pin at 1:20 and Butte was one more dual win from a spot in the semifinals.

Flathead ended the match with a run of wins, but the Bulldogs would savor the fact they turned the tables in just over a week.

A classy and deep squad from Havre denied Butte a chance to contend for the title by beating the Bulldogs 45-31 and dropping Flathead 61-21 to win the pool.

After dropping a pin decision at 112-pounds, Butte sent out Braxton Henningson to battle at 119-pounds and the freshman gave it all before dropping a 12-8 decision to Dylan Stewart.

The Bulldogs earned a forfeit win at 125- pounds but dropped a tense encounter at 130-pounds when Gage Weston fell 10-3 to Thomas Gruber in a closer match than the score would indicate.

Levi Renz brought the Bulldogs closer to the Blue Ponies with a 7-1 win at 135-pounds and Jarrett Rowling gave Butte the lead at 13-12 with an impressive 13-4 win at 140-pounds.

Then Butte got it’s first big win, via a Tommy Challeen pin at 145-pounds just before the end of the first round and the Bulldogs were up 19-12.

In a match as close to a street brawl as any in wrestling, Bryce Armstrong closed a second-round pin against Jordan Schroeder in a match that saw both young men shoe his best shots, before the Bulldog would triumph.

Butte was then up 25-12 with seven match left.

Lee Cannon the. Pulled off a magical pin at 5:26 in what had been a stale mate between two equally tough warriors at 171-pounds, and Butte shot ahead 31-15.

Back-to-back pins for Havre brought them within 31-27 heading into the heavyweight match.

After two rounds Bulldog Billy Robinson trailed 2-1 with a win a definite possibility.

Earning an escape, Robinson tied things at 2-2, but a top notch move by Dustin Odegard late got the Bulldog down and pinned just as the match ended, giving Havre the 33-31 lead.

“We’re still learning how to finish,” Humphrey said. “I think we had them in the ropes in a few matches so we just need to learn how to finish. I was proud of how our kids battled. Havre is a top notch program.”

Havre would clinch the win with a pin at 98-pounds.

Overall the Bulldogs went 4-1 in the middle five weight classes, but only 1-4 in the lower and upper five, with one being a forfeit at. 125-pounds.

“They are just tough kids (the middle weights), they are the guys who have put the most work in so we count on them to score points for us,” Humphrey said. “They are doing well. We are inexperienced at the top and bottom it’s just going to take work.”

The Bulldogs wrapped up their day with a competitive loss against a strong Missoula Sentinel squad 48-34, in a final consolation match.

“We have four hard days of work coming up trying to fix some of the mistakes and build on what works for us,” Humphrey said. “We are not that far and I think this team has great potential for us to get it to come together. I am overall very pleased. We are wrestling for each other.”

Consolation Pool 4 R

Southwest A rivals Dillon and Anaconda faced off in the first consolation match of pool 4 and it was a pin and default fest that went in favor of the Beavers.

Dillon won 54-36 behind nine pin wins while Anaconda settled for four forfeits to earn 24 of their points.

Anaconda earned pin wins from Trey Smollack at 98-pounds and Bryce Wigert at 215-pounds.

“Starting off yesterday against schools we don’t see any much in AA schools and then coming up against other Class A schools you wonder how the kids will respond and the kids came to wrestle,” Dillon head coach TJ Nelson said. “They wrestled Anaconda really hard. They wrestled tough and Anaconda is getting better every time we wrestle them, they are a really scrappy squad. I hope this tells our kids we are better this week than we were last week and we keep going in that direction.”

Dillon’s pin sinners were Kohltin Starkel, Chance Snellman, Drake Sprinkle, Isaak Koslosky, Mick Paffhausen, Lane Boka, Phil Vial, Parker Tezak, and Donovan Hucke.

Both teams lost their final match to Belgrade with the Beavers losing 51-28 and Anaconda dropping a 54-30 decision.

“Overall it was just great competition, good matches and lets us know what we have to work on,” Nelson said. “We will watch some film and work on the things that will take us to the next level.”
