The Butte High boys’ swim team finished fourth, and the girls’ team placed seventh at the Missoula Invitational this past Saturday.

Keegan Whelan made the biggest splash of the weekend for the Bulldogs, as a relay-team member and on an individual level.

Whelan, Levin Mullaney, Gavin Sison and Jake Bentley shattered a 19-year-old school record while competing in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome swam the race in a time of 1:36.58. The previous record, set in 1996, was 1:38.46.

The boys’ 200-yard medley relay team of Bentley, Whelan, Mullaney and Matt Ingersoll also swam will, placing third, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Kyle Komm, Ingersoll, Riley Walsh and Sison placed sixth.

On an individual level, Whelan took second in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. His time in the 100 freestyle (49.70 seconds) broke a record that had stood since 1989. He also broke the Butte High School record in the 50-yard freestyle, another mark that had been set in 1989.

Other swimmers who represented the boys’ team well were Sison, who was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, and Bentley, who had a sixth-place finish in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 butterfly. Mullaney also picked up points for the Bulldogs with a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, and an 11-place mark in the 100 butterfly.

On the girls’ side of the pool, the Butte 200 medley relay team of Sidney Christie, Carlee Johnson, Elsie Dickerson and Hannah Amtmann placed seventh while the 200 freestyle relay squad (Amtmann, Dickerson, Haley Hildreth and Johnson) placed eighth.

The girls’ team also saw Dickerson knock 23 seconds off of her best time in the 500-yard freestyle on her way to an eighth-place finish. She also placed 15th in the 50 freestyle.

Johnson finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 12th in the 200 freestyle, while Hildreth was and Cynthia Trudgeon finished in 13th and 15th, respectively, in the 100 butterfly.

The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday in Helena where they will compete in their final invitational meet of the season.


Choteau and Forsythe proved to be the dominant teams at the Conrad Wrestling Duals this past weekend at Conrad High.

The two-day tournament saw Choteau win all seven of its duals while emerging as the champion. Forsythe won six of seven matches, with his only blemish coming in the form of 31-24 loss to Choteau.

Fairfield/Sims (4-2) and Cascade (4-3) rounded out the top four.

Whitehall’s Brock Johnson was among those picked to the All-Tournament Team. The Trojan sparkplug, who wrestles in the 103-pound division, is trying to become the first Whitehall competitor to bring home a state championship in several years.
