HELENA — Trailing by two, Kaylynn Coverdell made the Dinos pay.
Coverdell received a pass and nailed a 3-pointer to help the Montana Tech women's basketball team defeat Calgary 68-67 on Thursday night in the PE Center
“We called a timeout and we wanted to get the ball inside to Kaylee (Zard),” Orediggers coach Carly Sanon said “It was a little bit long on that lob. She was able to get the kickout and we got one more pass and Kaylynn made a big shot for us.”
Montana Tech looked like it may run away with the game, scoring at a torrid pace to open up the third quarter. Tech built a 17-point lead with five minutes left in the third, but foul trouble helped the Dinos claw back into the game.
“The post players got into foul trouble so we went a little bit smaller for a bit, so that hurt us on the boards,” Sanon said. “They started getting rebounds. They got some offensive rebounds. They got some points in the paint.”
But during about 15 minutes of game time, the Orediggers managed only 14 points and turned the ball over too much, allowing the Dinos to take a lead late in the game.
The Orediggers tied the game at 65 with one minute left. An offensive rebound and put-back from Erin McIntosh gave the Dinos a 67-65 lead with 45 seconds left.
And then Coverdell decided the game.
“I’m really proud of how we stayed with it and got a win tonight,” Sanon said. “This is a tough game. It’s good. It’s a good tune-up. We had our last conference game and we lost the same way to LC State. We had finals, ad we came back and stayed in shape. You come back and have a great game. It’s really going to help us.”
Kourtney Coverdell led Tech with 15 points. Kaylynn added 13 points and Hannah Sparks had 12 points.
