Drummond-Philipsburg foursome, Deer Lodge’s Rodgers in Billings

Four wrestlers from Drummond-Philipsburg and one from Deer Lodge will hit the mats at the Class B-C state tournament in Billings this weekend, and coaches from both sides are hoping to see improved performances from kids who have been there before.

DP will have a pair of returning state performers in sophomore 135-pounder Tony Bergerson — who made it to Day 2 in 2012 — and junior 145-pounder Ty Pocha.

“The guys who have been there understand they only have six minutes and how fast a match goes,” DP head coach John Bergerson said. “I think sometimes kids don’t understand the urgency to score points right away after you shake hands.”

Chris Carroll, at 98 pounds, and Peydon Prince, at 152 pounds, will also be at the meet for DP.

“I know they’re in good shape and they’re tough kids,” John Bergerson said. “I’m really driving home that they need to leave — win, lose or draw — knowing they left it all on the mat.”

Deer Lodges’s lone representative will be 125-pounder Connor Rodgers, who took second at divisionals last weekend and made a brief appearance at state a year ago.

“He should do really well, I expect him to place,” Wardens coach Clint Stevenson said. “He should make it through to the semis fairly easily, but that’ll be a tough match.”

Stevenson said he expects the semis is where Rodgers will meet up with Harlem’s Teague Jones, who was ranked second in the state in the regular season’s final coaches poll.

“I told (Rodgers) he’s been here once, and I think he got a little overwhelmed last year,” Stevenson said. “He can calm his nerves, and he just needs to wrestle to his abilities.”
