At halftime of the Butte High-Bozeman boys' basketball game Thursday night at the Civic Center, the Bulldogs unveiled the school's new drum line.

The nine-member "Drum Dogs" impressed the crowd while wearing shirts that said "That's how we roll" on the back.

Then the drum line members circled the crowd and collected $675 for a program to make musical instruments available to all sixth grade students.

Unfortunately for Butte High, the rest of the rolling belonged to the Hawks.

Bozeman flexed a little muscle on a cold-shooting Bulldog night and rolled to a 77-43 win to spoil Butte High's Senior Parent Night.

"Tonight we got beat by a better team," Butte High coach John Thatcher said. "That's the bottom line."

Jake Owsley gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead, and Bozeman didn't trail.

The Hawks led

16-8 after the first quarter before opening the third quarter with a 15-4 run to take a comfortable lead.

Bozeman led

34-17 at the break.

Sophomore Brock Bond hit three straight 3-pointes midway through the third quarter to pull Butte to within 42-30.

But Tanner Roderick scored two quick buckets to spark a

12-1 run, and the Hawks led by

18 or more points the rest of the way.

"We didn't play well," Thatcher said. "They have a good team, but we didn't do the things we were supposed to do defensively. We got caught standing around looking, we didn't screen off very well, we didn't attack the basket."

Ryan Vanderpan came off the bench to lead Bozeman (15-4 overall, 7-4 in the Eastern AA) with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Owsley added 12 points, while Roderick and Trevor O'Brien each scored 11.

In all, 10 different Hawks scored, with Brandon Rydberg tossing in nine and T.J. Leap scoring eight.

Senior Mitch Hawbaker scored 17 points to pace the Bulldogs. Bond, who came off the bench and hit his first four 3-pointers, scored 12.

"I was really pleased with Brock Bond and Mitchell Hawbaker," Thatcher said. "They played well and they played hard."

Senior Cole Bugni tossed in eight, while senior Keaton Lappin and sophomores Cody Carriger and Bob Davies each scored two.

Seniors Corey Dennehy, Louis Bury, Kelly Sullivan, Kelly Schrapps and Tyler Miller also played for Butte High, which fell to 6-13 and 1-13.

The seniors and their parents were honored — along with the cheerleader and band seniors and parents — before the game.

The Bulldogs head to Billings Senior to close out the regular season Saturday.

Next week, Butte High will play a playoff game on the road — most likely at Billings West.

"Maybe this is a down time, and maybe that's a good sign," Thatcher said. "I'm a big believer that there's two ups and downs. Maybe this is the downer and hopefully we'll be able to play West in the playoff game."
