In the first round of the Western A Divisional Tournament in Hamilton on Wednesday, the Butte Central boys' and girls' basketball teams won their opening games.
The Maroons girls' defeated the Polson Pirates 58-19.
During the first half, Butte Central limited Polson to nine total points. In the second quarter, Alex Pierre was the only Pirates player to sink a field goal. But during the second half, Polson could never overcome the Maroons stout defense.
Butte Central was led by seniors Mollie Peoples and Emily St. John with 15 points and three steals apiece, respectfully.
The Maroons advanced to the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday as they face the Columbia Falls Wildkats.
"They're a very good basketball team," Murphy said. "They've only lost one game. They're ranked No. 1 for a reason. We have to come in and just play our game."
Later, the Maroons boys' team defeated Whitefish 49-29.
After falling behind in the first quarter, Butte Central pushed forward the rest of the game. In the second quarter, the Maroons scored 15 points as Whitefish put up two points. During the second half, Butte Central maintained its lead.
Coach Brodie Kelly said Cade Holter and Luke Heaphy were sparks off the bench. Senior Nate McGree led the team with 14 points and Sam Johnston chipped in 10 points, respectfully.
"I was really happy with the way we played defense for all but the first four minutes," he said. "Our guys guarded really well. We were just really nervous and tight offensively."
Butte Central faces the Polson Pirates 6:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.
