The Butte Central girls basketball team fought back from a rough offensive start but fell just short of a nonconference road upset of Class AA Helena High on Thursday night, falling 42-38 in The Jungle in Helena.

The Maroons (7-3, 5-0 Southwestern A) managed just four points in the opening period, but rallied back to take the lead in the third before the Bengals pulled away at the free throw line.

“We started out slow again and dug a hole and had a tough time coming back,” Central head coach Meg Murphy said. “We got going up and down but we turned the ball over quite a bit. That was tough to swallow.”

The Bengals made 14 of 25 free throws to Central’s 4-for-11 11 effort at the charity stripe.

“They hit some tough shots and they hit free throws when we put them at the line — which was quite often,” Murphy said. “It seemed like every time we made a run we put them at the line.”

Helena was led by Regan Fruh and Callie Kanthack with eight points apiece.

Danee Leary had game-highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Maroons, while

“Once again we took some long shots early in the game, didn’t hit some long shots and struggled getting things to fall,” Murphy said. “Hopefully we’ll get a game where the ball will fall for us in the first quarter.”

Butte Central next faces league opponent Stevensville on the road on Saturday.

“We’ve got to come out and establish our game and stop allowing other teams to dictate the first quarter,” Murphy said. “It’s a big game for us, a huge conference game. Goin on the road is always tough. Hopefully we’ll be ready.”

Correct statistics were not available for the game as of press time.
