Orphan Boy Shaft

A series of plastic pipes extending down the shaft of the Orphan Boy mine make a loop 300 feet below and return 75-78 degree water to the surface that is used to heat the nearby Montana Tech Natural Resources Building explains Pete Knudsen dean of the school of Mines and Engineering. Knudsen is holding a cat that he rescued from the shaft during a recent tour of the underground geothermal demonstration project.
