NorthWestern Energy saves trapped bird on utility pole
I'd like to put out a big THANK YOU out to NorthWestern Energy. I was walking my dogs about 10 p.m. the other night, and was almost home when I heard wings fluttering and looked up -- and on the side of a power pole there was a what looked like a woodpecker stuck between the plastic wire covers going up the power pole. I felt so bad for the trapped bird, but she was too high to reach.
I got out my flashlight and sure enough it was a Northern Flicker and one of her claws were stuck between the plastic tubing going up the pole. I was hesitant to call NWE, but couldn't stand the thought of the bird dying trapped on the pole.
I called NWE and the emergency rep was extremely professional and said he would put in a request for help and took down my number. I watched off and on not thinking anyone would show up, but sure enough, 30 minutes later I saw a truck pull up. I went out and thanked the NWE employee for coming out. He was very polite and said it was no problem and was sure he could free the bird.
It took him less than 10 minutes to get to the bird, freed the bird's leg from between the plastic tubing and the bird flew off and appeared to be totally unharmed.
I cannot tell you how appreciative I am for the quick service I got from NWE to save this helpless creature, and at such a late hour. I have a new respect for NWE knowing that they honor their pledge to save animals that get caught in power poles!
I wish I had gotten the names of the customer service rep, and the worker who came out to free the bird, so they could both get credit for a great act of kindness! Thank you Northwestern Energy!
