A 31-year-old female underwent surgery at St. James Healthcare Thursday morning after being shot in the back with a 9-millimeter handgun in the early hours in McGruff Park off Shields Avenue.

Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester said the victim was sitting in the back seat of a passenger car with two males in the front seats. The shooter shot through the front windshield of the car. No one else was injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. Thursday in the parking lot north of the skate park near the intersection of Second and Shields in Butte.

The female victim and her two associates pulled into the parking lot intending to meet another vehicle. A passenger car was already sitting in the parking lot, authorities said.

The shooter got out of a third car and fired two rounds at the victim’s car, according to Lester. Police believe there was no conversation between the shooter and the victims.

Police do not have a suspect, but the victim talked to police at the hospital and gave a description of the shooter. Lester could not say if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

He also could not say if the victims were targeted, but he said he does not believe this was a random act.

The victim is still in the hospital as of press time, but police do not know her condition.

Lester said police are conducting interviews and are still seeking information about the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Lt. George Holland at 406-497-1120.
