The Department of Transportation chose SkyWest Airlines to service Butte's Bert Mooney Airport under the new auspices of the Essential Air Service program.

It was welcome news, if long-coming, for airport director Pat Shea.

"It puts not only us but the community at ease," he said. "Now people can relax and we can go forward in a normal fashion. We've just been in limbo for too long."

SkyWest, too, was pleased to have secured the contract. In a statement released Thursday, the company said it "has a long history of providing strong, reliable air service to Butte passengers, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to continue this service."

Both of Montana's U.S. senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester, called for the DOT to make a quick decision on the matter after it had stretched to nearly six months.

"Montana jobs rely on transportation and it's critical that our small businesses and families have reliable and affordable air transportation," said Baucus, chairman of the Essential Air Service caucus, in a press release. "Today's announcement will help bring certainty to a situation that was creating some unease."

Tester echoed those sentiments.

"Keeping Butte businesses and families connected is important for jobs and businesses," he said in a release of his own. "Accessible, efficient air service means small businesses can expand and more visitors will enjoy Montana."

OR you can drive to Bozeman and Helena for real airports and GREAT flight options (cheaper too).

this is ridiculous and insulting to buttitians.
