Montana Tech’s athletic director is making the move to the vice chancellor’s chair, Chancellor Don Blackketter announced Thursday.

Joe McClafferty has been named vice chancellor for development and university relations. He will also oversee the Montana Tech Foundation as president. He was one of three candidates, the other two being Tenis Tennyson of Great Falls and Earl Cunningham from out of state.

McClafferty replaces Traci O’Neill, the interim vice chancellor who has filled in since the summer of 2011, after Mike Johnson left the job.

McClafferty, who holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Montana Tech, has served as the school’s athletic director since 2006. He said in a press release that he is excited to take on the new role.

“The more the university and foundation grow, the more funds we will have for faculty endowments, research, structural improvements, scholarships for students and an overall healthy campus,” McClafferty said.

Blackketter made the announcement at his State of Montana Tech address Thursday night. About 35 people attended. McClafferty was sick and couldn’t make it.
