Toastmaster winners listed
This week’s best speaker at the meeting of Top O’ The Mornin’ Toastmasters was Billie Holmlund, and Tonette Hollingsworth was named best topiuc respondent.
There was a three-way tie for best evaluator — Mike Griben, Lorri DePlazes and Sherry Flamand. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 a.m. Monday, March 5, at Perkins.
Tech alumni workshop Thursday
The Montana Tech Environmental Engineering Department will hold their 2018 alumni workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Copper Lounge on the campus of Montana Tech.
The day will kick off with Montana Tech alum Bret Gallo, chair of the Montana Tech Environmental Engineering Industrial Advisory Board, welcoming attendees, followed by a town hall forum on Environmental Engineering career options and opportunities discussed with alums Gina MacIlwraith, Michelle Slyder, Courtney Greyn and Dustin Wasley. Afternoon session include Evolution of the Seleniferous Overburden Cover Design for Simplot’s Smoky Canyon Mine by alum Grant Williams; Black Pine Mine Reclamation Project by Devin Clary; Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring for Remote Sites by alum Sarah Lupton; and Bakken History with an Air Quality Twist by alum Bret Gallo.
A panel discussion with alums John Haney, Jeff Chaffee, and Josh Vincent discussing Changing Environment: Policies, Politics and Perspectives on the Environment will start the afternoon. After the panel, Montana Tech’s three design teams will present. The teams are Solar Powered Biofilm Electrode Reactor for Aquatic Denitrification with team members Brett Jonson, Emma Rott, Tylar Holden and Nels Thorsrud; Feasibility Study of Reusing an Industrial Solid Waste for Soil Amendment with team members Mohammed Alotaibi, Dylan Livingston, Garrett Karnath, Trent Magill and Jeremy Shupak; and Using Waste Plastic to Enhance Water Evaporation While Discouraging Migratory Birds from Landing on the Berkeley Pit with team member Grant Myhre.
The day will end with department head Kumar Ganesan presenting the inaugural Environmental Engineering Performance Award for “outstanding and/or innovative work in the field of Environmental Engineering by a MTEE Alumni.”

Meeting set at Masonic Temple
Ruth Chapter #2 Order of Eastern Star will welcome Worthy Grand Matron Margie Matovich and Worthy Grand Patron Butch Damuth as they make their official visit to Butte Friday, March 2, at the Masonic Temple, 324 W. Park St.
At 5:45 p.m., members of Ruth Chapter and Eastern Star members from other chapters will gather for a soup supper. A meeting will follow at 7.
