Data systems expert to give talk

Luke Buckley, a data systems manager for the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, will talk about “Skiing through Mountains of Data” at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Natural Resources Building, room 128, on the Montana Tech campus.

Buckley has worked for the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology since 1994. He will discuss the user-centered design (USD) process used to build and refine the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) data center. The USD process allows designers and developers to create useful data information systems by brainstorming, using surveys, conducting in-person interviews, system testing, and design evaluation.

The lecture is open to the public. Visitor parking is available on the north side of the Natural Resources Building.

Library to screen documentary

The Butte-Silver Bow Public Library will be hosting First Fridays, an informational noontime series on the first Friday of the month in the Big Butte room on the third floor of the library. In the tradition of the Westside Shakespeare Club (a Chautauqua here in Butte), First Fridays, a free event, is dedicated to exploring our world, our history, and literary works.

This month’s session will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, March 2, and features a screening of the documentary “Black Code.” Based on the book by Ron Deibert, "Black Code" is the story of how the internet is being controlled and manipulated by governments across the world in order to censor and monitor their citizens. As they battle for control of cyberspace, ideas of citizenship, privacy, and democracy are challenged to the core.
