ANACONDA - Ruth Aline Sigurdson Nelson Voorhies died Friday,

July 9, 2010, in Anaconda Community Nursing Home from another courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Seaside, Ore., on April 16, 1923, to first

generation American parents, Mary Coma Sigurdson (Austrian) and Gunnar Sigurdson (Icelandic). She was raised on the West coast of Oregon/Washington, finally North Cove, Wash. She attended a one-room grade school in Grayland, Wash., and graduated at Ocosta High School Westport, Wash. She worked at a seafood

cannery in Westport and her Dad's gas station/ beach cabins in North Cove until her marriage.

Ruth met Robert O. Nelson, who was stationed at Tokeland, Wash., Coast Guard Station during World War II. After his discharge, they married in 1945 and moved to Anaconda.

Ruth and Bob were the proprietors of Nelson's Grocery in Anaconda until its closure in the late 1960s. They divorced. She worked at the Anaconda Nursing Home (then behind the courthouse) and Galen State Hospital, from which she retired as an LPN. She met and

married Jay Voorhies and enjoyed a very happy time until Jay's death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; her daughter, ViAnn Nelson Myers; her

parents; brothers, Jim and Ted; and sister, Eithel.

She is survived by her daughters, Sheryl (Woody) Driver and their family, Anna (John) McConaghy and their family, Woody (Pernel) Driver and their family, Washington; Barbara (Terry) Myers and their family, Tina (Mike) Kelso and Terryl (Nick) Kasper, Kansas, Mary Ruth (Shaun) Sullivan; son-in-law Doug Myers and his family, Vikki and Brandon, Kansas;

stepsons, Jay, Ben and Pat Voorhies and their

families, Anaconda and Missoula; sister, Lillian (Tootsie) Sigurdson Hayes Ocosta, Washington; great-grandchildren, Kattie (Aaron) Johnson, Virginia, Amanda Bjerke, South Dakota, Brianna and Derek Driver, Oregon; Greg, Courtney and Kyla Lowry, Colorado, Ashley Kelso, Kansas; great-great-grandchildren, Lillie May, Isaiah, Alex and Jay South Dakota and Oregon; many, many friends and co-workers.

We would like to extend our special Thank You! To Francis and Sue, and the ladies from Anaconda Hospice, the staff at Anaconda Community Nursing Home and Drs. Kidder and McMahon for their warm, considerate care.

At Ruth's request, there will be no funeral services. Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Lower Hill Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Anaconda Pintler Hospice, Hearst Free Library, Cancer Society or your choice.

Service arrangements are under the care of KT Riddle Funeral Homes.
