June 20, 1928-March 6, 2018
Tuesday morning, March 6, 2018, Lloyd James Magnuson, Senior passed away surrounded by all his children. He leaves behind a living legacy — his greatest accomplishments, pride, and joy — his five children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Lloyd spent the latter part of his life living with his son and daughter-in-law; enjoying and loving numerous visits, calls and Skyping from his family.
On June 20, 1928, Lloyd was born on a family farm in Grand Prairie Township, Barnes County, North Dakota, to Sam and Emma (Hass) Magnuson. He was the sixth of eight children. Lloyd was raised and educated in North Dakota. He and Viola Marie Martin were married in Valley City, North Dakota, on Dec. 5, 1947. They moved to Butte, Montana, in 1955; and the marriage later ended. Four children were born to this union. He later married and divorced Rose (Bennett) Barnes. They had one child together.
In 1946, at the age of 17, Lloyd enlisted in the United States Navy. He did boot camp in San Diego, served on the U.S.S. Missouri, and was stationed in Newfoundland.
Over the years, Lloyd worked in Butte for F&S Construction and later for a trucking company called Christie Transfer. He also worked for the Anaconda Smelter, Clyde E. Weed Concentrator in Butte, and the Montana Pole Plant. Later, he became self-employed; owning Lloyd’s Bike Shop – repairing bicycles and lawnmowers.
He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, boating, camping, watching TV, and rooting for his favorite sports teams.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Emma (Hass) Magnuson; his brother, Harold Magnuson; his sisters, Della Swenson, Evelyn Zaun, Adeline Zaun, and Helen Gilbo; and granddaughter, Elida Lambott.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Ann Englehart of Spokane, Washington; his brother, LeRoy Magnuson of Valley City, North Dakota, and his five children: Kathy Magnuson Bruno, Lloyd (June) Magnuson Jr., all of Butte, Bonnie Magnuson (Don) Jones of Billings, Sonia Magnuson of Boulder, and Sandra Magnuson Levengood of Helena.
