Mr. Lawrence J. (Larry) Palagi, 74, died late Monday, July 4, 2011, evening in St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula.
Larry was born on Aug. 21, 1936, in Butte, the son of Guido and Katherine (Bugni) Palagi.
Larry was educated at local schools and graduated from Boys’ Central. After graduation, he attended Western Montana College and received his degree in education.
On June 20, 1959, he married Lois O’Keefe in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. They spent nearly 44 happy years together until Lois’ death in 2003. Larry did some construction, worked for
various youth programs and also tended bar at the Shanty for his uncle, Dolph Bugni. He found a career in education. After graduating from college, Larry began a long and rewarding teaching career at East Junior High/East Middle School. He remained at East until his retirement in 1991.
Larry delighted in time spent with family and friends. He was always willing to help with a cookout or party. A gracious host, he could often be found flipping steaks and burgers, and making sure no one went thirsty. Larry was even known to put in the occasional “all-nighter” to make sure the roast pig was cooked to perfection.
In his younger days, Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he played softball for the Met Tavern city league team for several years. He was an all-around sports fan and was also an avid golfer, bowler and card player. He spent many happy hours engaged in these pursuits with his family and large circle of friends.
