May 10, 1961-Feb. 1, 2018
Kevin James Tarkalson, 56, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, surrounded by his family in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kevin was the oldest of five children of Ray and Norma Tarkalson in Anaconda, Montana, born on May 10, 1961.
Growing up, Kevin spent his childhood with his younger brother Kurt along his side playing Little League baseball and ice skating at the Commons and backpacking in the mountain lakes. He enjoyed summers by camping with his family at the Big Hole River, Bible camps at the C-N along the Dearborn River in Augusta, Montana, swimming and fishing. In the fall and winter he spent his time hunting and ice fishing with his friends and family.
In high school Kevin worked at Buttrey’s grocery store as well as participating in his passion of wrestling. Upon graduating from Anaconda Senior High School in 1979, he moved to the Portland, Oregon area to attend college. Kevin eventually found his professional calling in law enforcement. In the 1990’s he worked for Multnomah County as corrections officer and moved into the training division where he was a firearms instructor. In the early 2000’s, he become a lieutenant at the Oregon State Police Academy as the lead instructor for their defensive tactics division until his retirement in 2008. Upon retirement, he and his wife Peggy moved to Henderson, Nevada, where he spent his remaining years as a volunteer for the National Rifle Association.
Although Kevin was a great brother and spouse, his most prized role was that as an uncle. Kevin was lovingly known as “Uncle Buck” as he spent so much valuable time with his nieces and nephews supporting their interests of equestrian, baseball, wrestling, and music as well as creating “Camp Kevin” filled with hunting, shooting, riding snowmobiles, four-wheelers or giving rides on his latest interest; a Polaris Slingshot.
Kevin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray and Maggie Tarkalson and Albert and Ellen Indendi of Anaconda, Montana.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Tarkalson of Henderson, Nevada; his parents, Ray and Norma Tarkalson of Anaconda, Montana; brother, Kurt Tarkalson of Anaconda, Montana (nieces McKenzie, Megan, Morgan of Tigard, Oregon); sister, Toni Snapp of West Linn, Oregon (nephews Kane and Ian of West Linn, Oregon); sister, Terri and Don Summers of Billings, Montana (nieces and nephew Ellen, Dean and Ricci of Billings, Montana); and sister, Ebony Tarkalson of Missoula, Montana.
