Mr. Donald Frank David passed away Tuesday evening at his home in Butte surrounded by his loving family. A proud Italian, Donald was born in Butte April 6, 1926 to second generation American Italians Dominick and Caroline (Consoni) David. He grew up on Leatherwood Street in McQueen and attended Butte schools, including the Franklin School and the Butte Business College.
Don worked for the Montana Power and National Biscuit Company while in high school and then served his country in the Army-Air Corps. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Butte and married Betty Louise Osterman in Mountain View Methodist Church on Aug. 24, 1947. She preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 2012.
Don worked as a machinist for the Anaconda Co., then Western Iron Works. He worked there for many years as a machinist and ultimately a salesman until his retirement.
He and Betty enjoyed traveling together in their RV and were members of the Good Sam’s. They were members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and both very active in the Butte Elks Lodge, BPOE #240. Don was a 65-year member and served on the board of trustees and as chairman of the board. He was honored as Elk of the Year in 1973. He and fellow veterans were also honored as participants aboard the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2013.
Besides his wife and parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Carl David. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Randy Vetter of Butte; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Rebecca David of South Jordan, Utah; grandchildren, Amanda and Corey Cortez of Billings, Lisa Hansen of Butte, Jessica David of Denver, Jeffery David of Pullman, Washington, Aaron and Brandon Smith of West Jordan, Utah, Abby and Rich Peltomaa of Butte, McKenna and Jamie Czerneski of Pennsylvania; and great-grandchildren, Tyller Cortez, Charlotte Cortez, Jake Vetter, Tanner Hansen, Cooper Hansen, Canyon Smith, Jackson Smith, Casen Peltomaa, Cameron Peltomaa, M.J. and Tanner Czerneski.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Donald will begin Monday evening at 5 p.m. in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Pastor Melissa Engel officiating. Interment of ashes will take place in Sunset Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the United Veterans Council of Butte.
