Longtime Butte resident, Agnes Deppel, 85, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at the Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center in Gillette, Wyoming after a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be at the Wayrynen-Richards Funeral home from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, with a rosary following at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Deppel will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Hall officiating. Private interment will take place at Fort Harrison in Helena.
Mrs. Deppel was born July 13, 1932 in Havre, Montana to Alex and Mary Stewart and grew up in Box Elder, Montana. She graduated from Northern Montana College in 1952 with a degree in general secretarial. After college, she worked in Helena for Western Life. She met Jack Deppel on a blind date and they married in 1954. They settled in Butte, and together they raised their five children. Jack passed away in 1992, but she remained living in Butte for a total of 59 years before moving to Gillette, Wyoming in 2013 to be nearer family due to health issues.
Agnes was a long-standing member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Butte Montana, where she was involved in prayer group, Legion of Mary, and taking communion to residents of the Crest nursing home. She was active with the Arco ladies club, a ladies sewing club, craft club, and enjoyed attending Butte Central basketball games.
Agnes is survived by her five children -- Douglas (Jill) of Hamilton, Montana, Mark (Kevin) of Vancouver, B.C., Nancy (Mike) Fulton of Gillette, Wyoming, Scott of Baragada, Guam, and Mary (David) Thompson of Helena, Montana; her brother, James of Havre, Montana; nine grandchildren, John and Kevin Deppel, Amy, Colin, and David Fulton, Alex, April, Matthew, and Emily Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; sisters, Marjorie and Jean; and half-sisters Alene, Ursuline, and Kay.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Agnes’ name to St. John’s the Evangelist Church or Butte Central Catholic Education Fund.
