A 24-year-old man accused of shooting a man in the face -- and killing him -- during an altercation in Butte in August pleaded not guilty in Butte district court Thursday.

Jeff Lackman is charged with deliberate homicide in the death of Mark Partelow, 46. Partelow was killed by a single gunshot wound at a residence in the 1300 block of Casey Street in Butte on Aug. 5.

According to court documents , Lackman shot Partelow after an argument broke out in the yard of a house at 1322 Casey at 11:20 p.m. Partelow reportedly stepped between Lackman and another woman, who were arguing, when Lackman pulled a gun and shot Partelow in the face .

According to charging documents, Lackman was at the house on Casey Street to retrieve some of his personal belongings. The affidavit also states that Lackman was reportedly smoking methamphetamine  earlier that same night.

Lackman fled and was arrested near Roundup on Aug. 7. Lackman is being held on $500,000 bail.
