duplex fire

A firefighter checks out the second floor of this vacant duplex at 520 Dakota St. in Butte early Tuesday morning after fire gutted the top part of the building. Nobody was injured.

Fire gutted part of the second floor of a vacant, two-story duplex at 520 Dakota St. in Uptown Butte early Tuesday morning. Nobody was injured.

Firefighters got a call at 4:55 a.m. and when they arrived, flames were coming from the second floor, Fire Chief Jeff Miller said.

It took about half an hour to get the fire under control, he said, with some fighting it from the inside. Firefighters were still on the scene at 8 a.m. investigating but it was too early to determine a cause, Miller said.

A resident who lives down the street said the duplex has been vacant for years. It is about a block-and-a-half south of Emma Park and two blocks southwest of Butte High School.
