A 23-year-old Butte man is hospitalized after being shot in the abdomen early Sunday morning.

Investigators are questioning people who were in the residence in the 2300 block of Elm Street when the shooting occurred about 1 a.m., according to Butte police Capt. Jerome McCarthy. No one has been arrested or charged in the shooting as of late Sunday afternoon.

The victim was in stable condition at St. James Healthcare Sunday, McCarthy said.

Police reported there were three men and two women at the residence at the time. One man discharged a semi-automatic handgun and the victim was shot in the abdomen. One of the people in the home called 911.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, McCarthy said.

McCarthy said all the people in the home were acquaintances, and the victim was a guest in the house. McCarthy said alcohol appears to be a factor in this incident.

Police are expected to have more information on the shooting Monday.
