Butte-Silver Bow commissioners asked the county attorney Wednesday night to draft an ordinance that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
The council approved the motion without comment and nobody from the audience spoke on the issue, although some supporters of such a local law were on hand.
The draft ordinance is expected to mirror one approved in Missoula in 2010 designed to give protections to people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered.
Helena has a similar ordinance but it includes a provision saying in places where people normally appear in the nude, such as restrooms, people should use facilities designated for their anatomical sex.
Commissioner John Sorich suggested last week the ordinance here include that provision, but the decision was made to work from Missoula’s law for now.
