To participate in the Jeopardy!-format contest, all fourth through sixth graders in the district took a pop quiz in January. The top 25 scorers qualified to compete in the individual school contests, and the top five advanced to the citywide competition, held earlier this month.

The 30 students — five from each school — then were give study packets five weeks before the competition. They studied in such areas as algebraic equations, grammar, identify all countries in Africa, identify 50 Montana birds, read the novel, “The Witch of Blackbird Pond,” and know the meaning and spelling of 40 words from the novel. For other words, they had to study material from six core subjects in school.

Montana Tech and the Butte Education Foundation sponsored the event. The foundation gave all competitors “Got Brain” backpacks. Montana Tech gave the top five finishers $200 savings bonds.

“The students did this on a voluntary basis,” said Margaret Leary Principal Jim O’Neill. “Very impressive students. The top two students missed only one question each.”
