Brandon DeShaw, 39, exemplifies diversity.
The self-employed Plentywood native graduated from Montana Tech in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in engineering, earned his master's in international relations from Creighton University and is working on a second master's degree in theology at at Holy Apostles College and Seminary.
The U.S. Navy submarine veteran owns and operates Global Energy Laboratories, and he's a member of the Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Amid his career responsibilities, he also carves out time for volunteerism and family.
DeShaw is a volunteer firefighter for Home Atherton Volunteer, a member of Uptown Toastmasters Club and he participates in Knights of Columbus activities.
He lives in Butte with his wife, Maura Brennick DeShaw, and their two daughters.
His biggest challenge is "trying to find enough time to get the important things done, while also balancing family life, trying to be a good husband and dad," he said.
It's a balancing act, but it suits him, he says.
"I love the challenges of business ownership, and helping create jobs."
DeShaw says he's motivated by freedom that comes from satisfying occupations: working with and learning from very smart people in a variety of industries.
DeShaw offers this advice to anyone wanting to find for filling and rewarding career:
"Find someone who is doing what you want to do, and already excelling at it," he says. "Take them to lunch, and ask them how they made it to where they are. Do that several times, with several successful people. Then take action, and adjust your course as necessary."
