A Butte doctor is under investigation with the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation at the request of the Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff’s Department, a state spokesperson said Monday.

Eric Sell, with the Department of Justice, confirmed that Dr. Patrick McGree, a family practice physician, is under investigation. Sell said the Butte-Silver Bow County sheriff's office requested the state to investigate McGree in late December 2016.

Because the investigation is ongoing, Sell could not divulge details, he said.

Sheriff Ed Lester said he could not comment on why his department requested the state to investigate McGree. He would only confirm that the investigation is ongoing and that the state is in charge of it.

A call to McGree's office was answered by office personnel but McGree did not return the call.

The state's licensing board said Monday that McGree's medical license is in good standing and still active. It is up for renewal in March.

According to the website Healthgrades, McGree is 62 and has been in practice for 35 years.
