A fugitive from Anaconda wanted in connection with stealing a truck at gunpoint was arrested in Glendive Saturday after a standoff with law enforcement.
Anaconda Police Chief Tim Barkell told the Montana Standard Monday that William Schmidt, 41, is in custody in the Dawson County jail that morning. Schmidt had been wanted since Nov. 19 for allegedly stealing a 9mm handgun, cash and a pickup truck in Anaconda.
He was arrested Saturday after game wardens found him at Makoshika State Park near Glendive about 8:30 p.m. Schmidt is accused of pulling a gun on the game wardens and then trying to elude law enforcement in the stolen pickup truck. After a chase, Schmidt eventually was cornered by law enforcement on the campus of Dawson Community College. Schmidt surrendered after a two-hour standoff.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Barkell said Schmidt faces charges in Glendive, and Anaconda authorities plan to return him here to face for charges.
